Nestled just a short flight of stairs away from the iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, Satsuki-tei is more than just a cafe; it's a serene oasis perfect for weary travelers seeking respite from the bustling crowds. This charming locale invites you to savor traditional Japanese flavors while enveloped by the tranquil ambiance that sets it apart from the busy streets above.

At Satsuki-tei, the menu showcases a delightful array of soba dishes that beautifully embody the essence of Japanese culinary culture. Customers rave about their trio of soba varieties, each dish bursting with unique flavors and textures that cater to every palate. The cold, slippery noodles, served with refreshing dipping sauces, are a must-try—simple yet exquisite, making for a perfect summer meal. The vibe of dining in this cafe becomes an intimate experience as you savor each bite while surrounded by lush green plants and the soft sounds of the area.

For those craving something a little sweeter, Satsuki-tei offers a selection of desserts that are equally enchanting. Imagine cooling off with a traditional bowl of shaved ice, topped with your choice of syrup. While some patrons have noted that the syrup may be a touch modest, the refreshing nature of the treat certainly hits the spot during warm days in Kyoto. Customer Anthony Bao summed it up perfectly, praising the cafe's ample seating and the diverse offerings that make it a delightful pitstop after a hike up the temple stairs.

Don't just take our word for it; visitors have expressed their love for Satsuki-tei's peaceful setting and friendly staff. Wendy Yong highlights the cafe's proximity to the temple, making it an ideal location to escape the crowd for a moment of calm. Ginno Yong enthuses about the unique flavors of their gelatin noodles accompanied by soy sauce and vinegar, noting how perfect they are for a hot day. This is precisely why Satsuki-tei deserves a spot on your itinerary—not only for the food but for the inviting atmosphere that fosters relaxation and conversation.

So if you’re exploring the rich culture and history of Kyoto, make sure to carve out some time to enjoy the culinary delights at Satsuki-tei. It’s the perfect place to unwind while treating yourself to delicious Japanese noodle dishes and refreshing desserts, all within sight of one of the most magnificent temples in Japan.

satsuki-tei is a wonderful place to stop by while you are at kiyomizu-dera. It is super near the temple (face the temple entrance, there’s a flight of stairs on your right, walk down the stairs and you’ll see the cafe). Yet it is also peaceful and quiet, a great place to get away from the crowd. We tried 3 different types of soba, all are delicious! And we tried a few desserts that we’ve never tried before but we love! All in all, we love the food here! The owner, Yasuda-San is super friendly and hospitable! He made sure we were well taken care of!

Situated in the middle of the stairs to Kiyomizu-dera, this is a wonderful place to take a break from the climb or the heat. Lots of seats, a few actual food options, and ice cream and shaved ice! Shaved ice is great in the summer. Sadly they’re a bit stingy on the syrup.

Good restaurant for you to take a break after you go up to the Kiyomizu-dera. I ordered a shaved ice and it tasted really good.

Right outside kiyomizu-dera temple but because it's down a short flight of steps, it's nice and quiet. The staff are very friendly and hospitable. Though it's a cafe, the food quality is good. Do try the gelatin noodles with soy sauce and vinegar. Interesting flavours and great for a hot day. Some interesting drinks as well.

A true tea house that's adjacent to the entrance of a historic temple. A must rest stop before or after climbing further up the temple grounds.
